About This Journey
This is the Kenya circuit most first-time visitors should book. It trades Amboseli's mountain view for the Rift Valley lakes, which buys you rhino, a boat safari and a walk among giraffe — and it gives the Masai Mara three nights instead of two.
The extra Mara night matters more than any other decision on a Kenyan itinerary. Big cats do not perform on schedule, and the third day is the one that most often produces the sighting people talk about afterwards.
Distances are moderate throughout and the roads are good by regional standards. Nobody spends a whole day in the vehicle.
Trip Highlights
- Black and white rhino at Lake Nakuru — among the most reliable rhino viewing in Kenya
- A boat safari on Lake Naivasha and a walk on Crescent Island among giraffe and zebra
- Three full nights in the Masai Mara rather than the usual two
- The Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint on the drive up
- Rothschild's giraffe, Rothschild's-country woodland and big flamingo flocks when water levels allow
- Runs as a private trip or a scheduled small-group departure
Day by Day
Leave Nairobi and climb to the Rift Valley viewpoint, where the escarpment drops away and the floor of the valley opens out below — the first moment the trip feels like Africa rather than a transfer.
Arrive at Naivasha for lunch. The afternoon is a boat safari among hippo pods and fish eagles, followed by a walk on Crescent Island, where you can move on foot among giraffe, zebra and waterbuck because there are no large predators.

A short drive north to Lake Nakuru, a fenced alkaline-lake park that has become one of Kenya's most dependable places to see both black and white rhino.
Game drives take in the lakeshore and the acacia woodland above it — Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, and the leopards that favour the trees. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with water levels, so we describe them honestly rather than promising the postcard.

Continue south-west through farmland and escarpment country to the Mara, arriving in time for a late-afternoon game drive.
The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and holds the densest concentration of big cats in East Africa.

Two full days in the reserve, worked properly: early starts with packed breakfasts, a rest through the flat midday light, and long afternoon drives.
That gives you the Mara Triangle, the river, and the open plains where cheetah hunt. Between roughly July and October the migration is here and river crossings become possible — never schedulable, but possible. An optional Maasai village visit and a dawn balloon flight can both be arranged.
