About This Journey
Northern Uganda is the part of the country almost nobody books, and the part with the strongest cultural identity. This trip treats the Acholi sub-region as a destination in its own right rather than the drive to Kidepo — two nights in Gulu and one in Kitgum, with community dance and storytelling arranged in advance, before three nights in the remotest national park in East Africa.
The cultural centrepiece is Larakaraka, the Acholi courtship dance: young men locked leg-to-leg in a semi-circle with feathers and calabashes, young women dancing opposite, and the moko — the stage where the women walk in and choose. You will also see Bwola, the royal dance performed for the Rwot, and hear the calabash-and-bicycle-spoke rhythm that carries across open ground to summon a village.
Then Kidepo. Hemmed by mountains on the South Sudan border, it holds lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and ostrich across the Narus Valley, and receives a tiny fraction of the visitors Queen Elizabeth does. It is the closest thing Uganda has to wilderness in the old sense — and the Karamojong manyatta visits on its fringes are as culturally distinct again from the Acholi as the Acholi are from the south.
We book cultural groups directly rather than through intermediaries, so the fee reaches the dancers and musicians. Private throughout.
Trip Highlights
- Larakaraka danced by a community group in the Acholi sub-region — including the moko, where the women choose
- Bwola, the Acholi royal dance, and the dingi dingi drums
- An evening of wang oo — the fireside storytelling that carried Acholi history before the war interrupted it
- Three nights in Kidepo Valley, statistically the least-visited major park in Uganda
- Lion, elephant, buffalo and cheetah across the Narus Valley, usually with no other vehicle in sight
- A Karamojong manyatta visit and the Kanangorok hot springs near the South Sudan border
- Cultural groups booked directly, so the money reaches the performers
Day by Day
Land at Entebbe on Lake Victoria and transfer the short distance to your hotel. Most international flights arrive late, so nothing is scheduled.
Your guide runs through the route north over dinner — this is a trip with real distances in it, and the plan is worth understanding before you start.

Head north out of Kampala, crossing the Nile at Karuma where the river forces through a narrow gorge — a good leg-stretch and often the first baboons of the trip.
Gulu is the principal town of the Acholi sub-region and the centre of its cultural life. Arrive in the afternoon with time to walk the market and get a feel for a part of Uganda that looks and sounds quite unlike the south.

A full day with an Acholi cultural group. The morning is the dances proper: Larakaraka, the courtship dance, with the men locked leg-to-leg in their semi-circle, feathers and calabashes, building to the moko where the women walk in and choose their partner. Then Bwola, the stately royal dance performed in a great circle for the Rwot, and the small fast drums of dingi dingi.
In between, time with the musicians — the big drum, the two small drums, the fiddle, and the calabash struck with bicycle spokes that carries the sound across open country.
The afternoon is quieter and, for most people, the part they remember: sitting with elders to hear what these dances did before they were performances, and how much of the teaching had to be rebuilt after two decades of displacement. In the evening, wang oo — storytelling around the fire, which is how Acholi history moved between generations.

A shorter drive east to Kitgum, deeper into the Acholi sub-region and considerably quieter than Gulu. The landscape opens out — rock outcrops, palms, and long views.
An afternoon community visit here, with a different group and a different repertoire. Kitgum sees very few visitors and the reception reflects it.

The drive to Kidepo is part of the experience — the country empties out, the Karamoja escarpment rises, and the road becomes genuinely remote. This is the leg that makes the park feel earned.
Enter the park in the afternoon and take a first game drive through the Narus Valley on the way to your lodge, with the Morungole range on one side and the South Sudan border on the other.

A full day of game drives in the Narus Valley, where the park's water holds through the dry season and the animals concentrate. Lion — including the ones that lie on the rock kopjes — elephant, buffalo in very large herds, giraffe, zebra, and the cheetah and ostrich that occur nowhere else in Uganda.
What people comment on afterwards is not any single sighting but the absence of other vehicles. Kidepo is regularly rated among Africa's finest parks and receives a fraction of the traffic.

Drive north through the Kidepo Valley itself to the Kanangorok hot springs, close to the South Sudan border — bleak, beautiful country with borassus palms and almost no one in it.
In the afternoon, a visit to a Karamojong manyatta on the park fringes. The Karamojong are pastoralists and culturally distinct again from the Acholi — different language, different economy, a life organised around cattle. Seeing both communities in one trip is the strongest argument for coming north.

A final morning game drive, then the return south. We strongly recommend the scheduled light aircraft from Kidepo's airstrip to Entebbe — it converts two long days of driving into a little over an hour and gives you an aerial view of country you have just crossed by road.
Transfers are arranged around your international departure. Murchison Falls sits naturally on the overland route if you would rather drive back and add a park.

Ready to Plan This Safari?
Every trip we run is private and tailored around you — your dates, your pace, your budget. Tell us what you have in mind and one of our safari planners will craft it into a detailed, costed proposal.
Quoted per person sharing. The cultural fees are paid directly to the performing groups and we are happy to show you that breakdown — it is the part of a cultural itinerary most worth scrutinising. Kidepo is a long way from anywhere, so the flight-versus-drive decision moves the price more than the lodge tier does.
