About This Journey
A standard gorilla trek gives you one hour. This itinerary is built around the permit that gives you four — the Gorilla Habituation Experience, available only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and only to eight people a day worldwide.
Rather than visiting a family long since accustomed to visitors, you join the rangers, trackers, and researchers still doing the work of habituation: following a semi-habituated group through the forest, watching them decide what to make of you, and seeing the slow, patient process that makes all gorilla tourism possible.
Either side of that day the pace is gentle — a scenic drive south-west through Uganda's highlands, a Batwa cultural walk and a canoe on Lake Mutanda to recover, and a closing night on Lake Bunyonyi before the return to Entebbe. Private throughout, with your permit bought and confirmed before you travel.

Day by Day
Leave Entebbe early and head south-west, crossing the Equator at Kayabwe and stopping for lunch near Mbarara. The landscape shifts through the afternoon — cattle country gives way to terraced hillsides, then to the steep, dark forest edge of Bwindi's southern sectors.
Arrive at your lodge above Rushaga in the late afternoon. Dinner is early, and so is bed — tomorrow starts before dawn.

Breakfast at first light, then to the Rushaga park headquarters for the briefing, where a Uganda Wildlife Authority warden allocates your family and runs through the rules. You set out with rangers, trackers, and a researcher, picking up the family from the nests they built the night before.
Once contact is made, the four hours begin. Rather than standing at a fixed distance, you move with the group as they feed and rest, while the team makes the soft grunts and vegetation-chewing gestures that tell the gorillas nobody here is a threat. Lunch is a packed one, eaten in the forest.
Expect a full day — eight to ten hours door to door, on steep ground with no path worth the name. A porter is included, and on this trek more than any other, worth having.

A deliberately easy day after yesterday. Start with the Batwa cultural trail — a walk with members of the community who lived in this forest as hunter-gatherers until it became a national park, covering the plants they used, the shelters they built, and what conservation cost them.
Transfer on to Lake Mutanda in the afternoon and take a dugout canoe out onto the water, with the Virunga volcanoes lined up on the horizon.

A short morning drive to Lake Bunyonyi, the deep, island-scattered lake that closes most trips through Uganda's south-west. It is bilharzia-free and safe to swim in — rare for East African lakes.
The afternoon is yours: a boat trip between the islands, a walk along the terraced shoreline, or a chair on the deck and nothing at all.

After breakfast, begin the drive back north to Entebbe, stopping for lunch en route, with a drop at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon.
For travellers short on time, this leg can be replaced with a scheduled flight from Kisoro airstrip to Entebbe — ask us to quote it.

The gorilla habituation permit alone is $1,800 per person and is included in the trip price. Only 8 are issued per day across the whole of Africa, and since 1 March 2026 the Uganda Wildlife Authority no longer holds them unpaid — dates are confirmed once the permit is bought outright.
