Park Rates for Uganda Residents and East African Citizens

Short answerUganda prices its parks in four tiers — foreign non-resident, foreign resident, Rest of Africa and East African citizen. A gorilla permit is $800 for a visitor and $700 for a resident. Annual entrance passes exist at $350 / UGX 350,000 but only for residents and EAC citizens, and never cover permits.

Almost everything written about Uganda's parks is priced for visitors flying in. There is a whole other rate structure for people who live here — expatriates in Kampala, East African citizens, students, tour staff — and it is barely discussed anywhere.

The four rate categories

What a gorilla permit costs a resident

The annual pass

Two limits matter. It covers park entrance only — not gorilla or chimpanzee tracking, not mountaineering, not hiking. And vehicle entry is separate, which for a private car is a real cost on every visit.

Entrance and activity rates

Camping and UWA accommodation are similarly tiered — a park dormitory is UGX 25,000 for adults and UGX 5,000 for students in a group. See camping in Uganda's national parks.

Proving your status

UWA states plainly that all visitors must present valid identification documents to confirm resident status. In practice:

• Foreign residents — carry your work permit or residence documentation. The annual pass specifically requires a one-year work permit.
• EAC citizens — national identification.
• Students — a valid student identity card.
• Tour company drivers — evidence of the licensed company they work for.

Turning up expecting a resident rate without the paperwork means paying the visitor rate. This is not discretionary at the gate.

Is the annual pass worth it?

Straightforward arithmetic. An individual pass at $350 / UGX 350,000 against a foreign-resident Category A entrance of $30 per 24 hours pays for itself in roughly a dozen park days.

Resident and EAC rates: common questions

How much is a gorilla permit for a Uganda resident? $700 for foreign residents, $500 for Rest-of-Africa visitors and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, against $800 for foreign non-residents. Valid identification is required to claim any of these rates.

Can you buy an annual park pass for Uganda? Yes, but only if you are a foreign resident in Uganda or an East African citizen — not as a visitor. An individual pass is $350 or UGX 350,000, a couple $600, and a family with up to four children $800. It covers park entrance across all protected areas but not package activities.

Does the annual pass cover gorilla trekking? No. The pass explicitly excludes package activities — gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, mountaineering and hiking. It covers park entrance only, and vehicle entry is paid separately.

What do East African citizens pay for park entrance in Uganda? UGX 25,000 at Murchison Falls and UGX 20,000 at most other major parks, against $45 and $40 for foreign non-residents. Ugandan pupils, students and wildlife clubs pay considerably less again.

Do safari guides and tour drivers pay park entrance? Drivers from licensed Ugandan tour companies enter free. Safari guides can buy an annual pass at UGX 200,000 and taxi drivers at UGX 150,000. These categories are defined in the UWA tariff.

What counts as a foreign resident in Uganda? For the annual pass, UWA requires a work permit valid for one year. For discounted rates generally, all visitors must present valid identification documents confirming resident status — so carry the paperwork, not just the claim.
