A Short Uganda Safari: What's Realistic in 3 to 5 Days

Short answerA short Uganda safari works if you fly at least one leg. Three days by road from Entebbe is two days driving and one gorilla trek; flying to a Bwindi airstrip makes it a real trip. Five days covers gorillas plus one other stop. For a genuine weekend, Lake Mburo or Murchison — not gorillas.

Most Uganda content assumes you have ten days. Plenty of people do not — a work trip with a few days on the end, a stopover, or simply limited leave. This guide is about what is genuinely achievable in three to five days, and where the honest limits are.

The problem with a short Uganda trip

Uganda's gorillas are in Bwindi, in the far south-west. Entebbe airport is in the centre-south. That drive takes most of a day and is normally broken with an overnight, which on a three-day trip consumes the entire trip.

There are exactly three ways around this, and every short Uganda itinerary uses one of them:

1. Fly to an airstrip near Bwindi.
2. Fly into Kigali instead, which is a few hours from Bwindi's southern sectors.
3. Don't go to Bwindi — do a northern or central park instead.

Three days

Four days

Four days is where a road trip to Bwindi becomes reasonable rather than brutal: drive down with an overnight at Lake Mburo, trek on day three, and drive back. You get a game drive at Mburo on the way, which turns a transit night into a stop.

Alternatively, fly to Bwindi and use the saved days for Queen Elizabeth on the way back by road — trek, then drive north through the Ishasha sector for the tree-climbing lions, then fly out from Kasese.

Five days

Five is the first length where a short Uganda trip stops feeling compromised. Three shapes work well:

• Gorillas and savanna. Entebbe → Lake Mburo → Bwindi (trek) → Queen Elizabeth → fly or drive out. The classic compressed circuit.
• Gorillas and chimpanzees. Bwindi then Kibale, the two primate headliners, with Queen Elizabeth passed through between them.
• Gorillas and rest. Bwindi then two nights at Lake Bunyonyi. Fewer boxes ticked and a much better holiday than the alternatives.

A weekend from Kampala

For residents and anyone already in Kampala, a genuine two-night weekend is possible — just not to Bwindi.

Adding a safari to a work trip

This is common and works well with two or three spare days. The principles:

• Stay in Entebbe, not Kampala, on your final night — see where to stay in Entebbe.

• Three spare days: Murchison properly, or Kibale.
• Gorillas: only with a flight, and only with three clear days.

When Rwanda is the better answer

We would rather say this than sell a bad trip: if you have three or four days, want gorillas, and do not want to pay for a domestic flight, go to Rwanda.

Short Uganda safaris: common questions

Is a 3-day Uganda safari possible? Yes, but effectively only with a domestic flight. Three days by road from Entebbe means roughly two days driving and one gorilla trek. Flying to an airstrip near Bwindi turns it into a genuine short trip: fly in, trek, fly out.

What can you do in Uganda in 5 days? Gorillas plus one other stop. The usual shapes are Bwindi plus Queen Elizabeth's savanna, or Bwindi plus Lake Bunyonyi for rest, or gorillas plus chimpanzees in Kibale. Five days by road is tight but workable; with one flown leg it becomes comfortable.

Can you do a weekend safari from Kampala? Yes, but not for gorillas. Lake Mburo is close enough for a genuine weekend, Murchison Falls works at a push with an early Friday start, and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary plus Murchison makes a strong two-night trip. Bwindi is too far.

Should I go to Uganda or Rwanda if I only have 3 days? Rwanda, unless you are flying domestically in Uganda. Kigali is a few hours from Volcanoes National Park where Entebbe is most of a day from Bwindi, which makes a three-day gorilla trip straightforward in Rwanda and awkward in Uganda.

Can you add a safari onto a business trip to Kampala? Easily, if you have two or three spare days. Lake Mburo and Murchison Falls are both reachable, and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is on the road north. Gorillas need more time than a typical work-trip extension allows unless you fly.

Is it worth flying to Bwindi rather than driving? On a trip of five days or less, almost always. The flight converts roughly two days of road into a couple of hours in each direction, which on a short trip is the difference between a real safari and a driving holiday with one hour of gorillas in it.
