Short answerBwindi has four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo — each with its own headquarters, families and trailheads. There is no road through the forest, so moving between them takes two to four hours around the outside. Your permit names one sector and you cannot trek from another, which makes this the first decision in any Bwindi trip.

More Bwindi trips go wrong on this one point than on anything else. The sectors are not entrances to the same place; they are four separate bases around a forest with nothing but forest in the middle.

This guide compares them properly. For the accommodation that follows from the choice, see where to stay in Bwindi, and for the families in each, the gorilla families of Bwindi and Mgahinga.

Why the sectors exist at all

Bwindi is a forest draped over extremely steep terrain — the name “impenetrable” is descriptive rather than poetic. There is no through road. Access has therefore developed at four separate points around the edge, each with its own community, its own park headquarters, and its own habituated gorilla families ranging nearby.

The consequence is that the drive from Buhoma in the north to Rushaga in the south takes a substantial part of a day, despite the two points being far closer as the crow flies. Plan for the road, not the map.

Buhoma

The original sector and still the default. Buhoma has been receiving trekkers longest, which shows: a proper cluster of lodges at every price point, restaurants, a community rest camp, craft stalls, and the park headquarters within a short drive of all of it.

It is also the sector that follows naturally from Queen Elizabeth National Park via the Ishasha sector, which is the route most Uganda itineraries take southward. If your trip is doing the classic western circuit, Buhoma is usually where the geography wants you.

Ruhija

High on the eastern side, cooler than the rest of the forest, and markedly quieter. Ruhija is the birders' sector — the Mubwindi Swamp trail is the classic site for African Green Broadbill, and the road through Ruhija is one of the better stretches of Albertine Rift birding anywhere.

The trade-off is accommodation: the thinnest choice of the four sectors, with no real luxury tier. Travellers combining gorillas with a serious bird list accept that; most others do not end up here.

Rushaga

Rushaga holds more habituated families than any other sector, which makes it the most likely place to find a permit at short notice and the reason it carries so much of Uganda's daily capacity.

It is also, with Nkuringo, the only place offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience — four hours with a family still being habituated rather than the standard one. Anyone doing that stays south by necessity.

Nkuringo

Nkuringo sits highest, on a ridge with the Virunga volcanoes on the skyline, and it has the most dramatic setting of the four. It also has the hardest reputation.

The reason is structural rather than bad luck: the trailhead is on high ground and the gorillas are often below it, so treks frequently begin with a descent and end with a long climb back up — at the end of the day, after several hours on your feet. A descent-first trek is psychologically and physically the opposite shape of a climb-first one.

Which sector is hardest?

Two honest caveats before the ranking. First, difficulty on any given day is set by where the gorillas are, not by the sector — a Buhoma trek can be six hours and a Nkuringo trek ninety minutes. Second, the porters available at every trailhead change the equation more than the sector does.

Sector difficulty, in general terms
SectorGeneral difficultyWhy
BuhomaGentlest overallLower altitude, less extreme gradients near the trailhead
RushagaModerate, variableMany families across varied terrain
RuhijaModerate to hardHigh altitude, cold and often wet
NkuringoHardest reputationRidge trailhead — treks often descend first and climb out at the end
On any given day, where the gorillas have moved matters more than any of this.

Picking a sector

  1. First-time visitor, standard itinerary: Buhoma.
  2. Late booking or wanting two treks: Rushaga.
  3. Doing the Habituation Experience: Rushaga or Nkuringo — no other option.
  4. Serious birder: Ruhija.
  5. Coming from Kigali: Rushaga or Nkuringo — much shorter drive than Buhoma.
  6. Coming from Queen Elizabeth: Buhoma, via Ishasha.
  7. Concerned about fitness: Buhoma, and say so at the briefing.

In practice the sector is often decided by what permits exist on your dates, which is why we secure the permit first and build everything else around it. See how permits and pricing work or tell us your dates and we will tell you what is actually available.

Bwindi's sectors: common questions

What are the four sectors of Bwindi? Buhoma in the north-west, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. Each has its own park headquarters, its own habituated gorilla families, and its own trailheads. There is no road through the middle of the forest, so moving between sectors means driving around it — two to four hours depending on which pair.

Which Bwindi sector is best for gorilla trekking? Buhoma for a first visit — it has the widest choice of accommodation, the most established infrastructure, and good road access. Rushaga if you want the best odds of permit availability or the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Ruhija if you are also birding. Nkuringo if you want the most dramatic setting and don't mind the hardest walking.

Which Bwindi sector has the steepest trek? Nkuringo has the strongest reputation for difficulty. Its trailhead sits high on a ridge and many treks begin by descending into the forest, which means finishing with a long climb back out at the end of the day when you are already tired.

Which Bwindi sector is easiest for older or less fit travellers? No sector is reliably easy, because gorillas move and the walk depends on where they are that morning. Buhoma is generally the gentlest terrain and has the shortest transfers, which is why we point less mobile travellers there — but the more important factor is declaring your fitness at the briefing so rangers place you with the nearest family.

How long does it take to drive between Bwindi's sectors? Two to four hours depending on the pair and road conditions, because the route goes around the forest rather than through it. This is why your permit's sector determines where you stay, and why booking a lodge in the wrong sector is an expensive mistake.

Can you trek in a different sector from the one on your permit? No. Permits are issued for a specific sector and the briefing happens at that sector's headquarters. You cannot present a Rushaga permit at Buhoma. Confirm your sector before booking any accommodation.
