This is the night nobody plans and everybody needs. Long-haul flights into Uganda tend to land late, safari days start early, and the gap between the two is where trips quietly go wrong — bags that didn't arrive, a delayed connection eating the first game drive, or a four-hour drive attempted on no sleep.

Stay in Entebbe, not Kampala

Entebbe International Airport is in Entebbe, on a peninsula in Lake Victoria. Kampala, the capital, is a separate city roughly 40 km away. That distance is nothing on paper and a great deal in practice — the road is busy, the traffic is unpredictable, and an hour is an optimistic estimate at the wrong time of day.

Where to stay in Entebbe

Entebbe's accommodation is genuinely good across all three tiers, and the town is small enough that everything is within a short drive of the airport. The lakeshore properties are worth the small premium after a long flight — a terrace over Lake Victoria is a far better first impression of Uganda than a business hotel by a roundabout.

When Kampala is the right call

Kampala earns a night when you actually want the city — the Kasubi Tombs, the craft markets, the Ndere Centre's cultural performances, and easily the best restaurants in the country. Our Kampala city guide covers what is worth the time.

Our recommendation is to place it at the end of a trip, not the start. You arrive back from the parks with the flexibility to sit in traffic without it costing you anything, and a city day is a much better decompression than a first-night blur.

What to actually do with the arrival day

If you land in the morning rather than overnight, the arrival day is genuinely usable — and Entebbe has more to offer than its role as an airport town suggests.

• Entebbe Botanical Gardens.On the lakeshore, an easy walk, and superb for a first taste of Uganda's birds — turacos, sunbirds and the very loud woodland kingfisher.
• Uganda Wildlife Education Centre. Next to the gardens, a rehabilitation centre rather than a conventional zoo. Useful for learning to identify what you are about to see.

The departure night is a different problem

Most international departures from Entebbe leave late at night, which creates an awkward final day: checked out of your lodge by ten, wheels-up at eleven in the evening.

Two ways to handle it. Book a day room at an Entebbe hotel so you have somewhere to shower and rest before the flight — cheap, and disproportionately worth it after a fortnight of early starts. Or fill the day deliberately with Mabamba or the Botanical Gardens, which turns dead time into one more thing seen.

How to choose

1. Book Entebbe for the arrival night. Nearly always the right answer.
2. Confirm 24-hour reception and a transfer that matches your actual landing time.
3. Ask about early or packed breakfast for the first safari morning.
4. Put Kampala at the end if you want the city.
