Kidepo sits in Uganda's far north-east, hard against the South Sudan border, ringed by mountains and a very long way from everything. It is the least-visited of Uganda's major parks and, for a lot of people who make it there, the best.

The shortest lodge list in Uganda
Murchison has dozens of properties. Queen Elizabeth has more. Kidepo has a handful. That scarcity is not a failure of development — it is why the park feels the way it does, and it is the reason you can game drive for a morning in the Narus Valley without meeting another vehicle.
It does mean the usual advice — compare properties, weigh the tiers, pick the one closest to the gate — mostly does not apply. Here you are choosing between a small number of genuinely different things.
Stay in the Narus Valley
Kidepo has two valleys. The Narus holds permanent water and is where the wildlife concentrates through the dry season — buffalo in very large herds, elephant, giraffe, lion, and the highest concentration of game in the park. The Kidepo Valley itself, further north, is seasonal and dries out; it is spectacular and empty, and it is not where you want to sleep.
Accommodation is clustered around the Narus for exactly that reason. Anything describing itself as being at Kidepo should be there or close to it.

Fly or drive — and what it does to your booking
Getting to Kidepo is the other half of the accommodation question, because the two are coupled. Driving from Kampala is a very long haul, normally broken with a night at Gulu or Kitgum on the way. Flying turns two days of road into a couple of hours.

How many nights Kidepo needs
More than you would give a closer park, because the effort of getting there is the cost you have already paid.
- Two nights — the absolute minimum, and only if you fly. One full day in the Narus Valley.
- Three nights — the right number. Two full days lets you cover the Narus properly and take a run north towards the Kidepo Valley and the Kanangorok hot springs.
- Four nights — for photographers, birders, and anyone who came specifically for the emptiness.
A two-night stay reached by road is a poor trade: four days of driving for one day of game viewing. If the budget will not stretch to flying, it is usually better to give the time to Murchison Falls and save Kidepo for a return trip.
How to choose
- Book accommodation before fixing anything else. Availability is the binding constraint at this park.
- Stay in the Narus Valley.
- Decide fly vs drive early — it changes the number of nights, the vehicle days, and the budget.
- Give it three nights if you can. Two is thin for the effort involved.
- Travel in the dry season, when the Narus holds the game and the roads behave.

Where can you stay in Kidepo Valley National Park? The choice is small — a handful of properties in and around the Narus Valley, spanning one high-end lodge, two or three mid-range camps, and a basic rest camp run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Kidepo has fewer beds than any other major Ugandan park, which is a large part of its appeal and the main constraint on visiting.
How do you get to Kidepo Valley National Park? By scheduled or chartered light aircraft to the airstrip near the park, or by road from Kampala — a very long drive usually split across two days. Most travellers on shorter trips fly in one direction and drive the other, or fly both ways.
Is Kidepo worth the extra cost and travel time? For travellers who have done other East African parks and want somewhere genuinely remote, yes. Kidepo is Uganda's least-visited major park and the sense of space is unlike anywhere else in the country — you can spend a morning game driving without seeing another vehicle. For a first safari on a tight schedule, the cost and travel time are hard to justify.
When is the best time to visit Kidepo? The dry months, when wildlife concentrates around the permanent water in the Narus Valley and the roads are reliable. In the wet season the Kidepo Valley itself has water, animals disperse, and access roads can become difficult — which matters more here than elsewhere because the alternatives are so limited.
Should I book Kidepo accommodation in advance? Yes, further ahead than anywhere else in Uganda. With so few beds in the park, peak-season availability disappears early, and there is no fallback property down the road if your first choice is full.
