Where to Stay at Sipi Falls

Short answerThere are only a handful of lodges at Sipi, all on the escarpment near the village, and the one thing that separates them is whether your terrace actually faces the main waterfall. Ask specifically — being “at Sipi Falls” and having a view of Sipi Falls are different claims.

Sipi sits on the north-western slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, where three waterfalls drop off the escarpment into a green valley of coffee and banana. On a clear afternoon the view from the escarpment runs out across the Karamoja plains for what feels like forever.

It is also a long way from everything else on a Uganda itinerary, which makes it a deliberate choice. This guide covers where to stay and whether it earns the days. Our Sipi Falls guide covers the place itself.

The view is the product

At most destinations in this series, the deciding factor is distance to a briefing point or a park gate. At Sipi there is no gate. What you are buying is a position on a hillside, and the properties differ mainly in which way they face and how far down the slope they sit.

Where to stay at Sipi Falls

The whole market here is small and comparatively simple — this is not a place with a deep luxury tier, and the appeal of the best properties is the position rather than the service. Budget options include a long-running backpacker place on the escarpment with, arguably, the best view of any of them.

What you'll actually do

• The three-waterfall hike. The standard activity — several hours, steep in places, muddy after rain, with a guide from the village. It takes in all three falls and gets you behind the lowest one.
• Abseiling down the face beside the main falls, for those inclined.
• Coffee tours — see below.
• Village and community walks through the farms on the slopes.
• Sitting still. The afternoon light on the escarpment is the reason people extend their stay.

The coffee, which is the surprise

Arabica has been grown on these slopes for generations, and the Sipi coffee tours are among the genuinely excellent community tourism experiences in Uganda. You walk through the plantation, pick, pulp, dry, roast over a fire and grind by hand, then drink the result. It takes a couple of hours and it costs very little.

Sipi as a Mount Elgon base

Mount Elgon is an enormous extinct volcano straddling the Kenyan border, with one of the largest calderas in the world. Multi-day treks to the Wagagai summit run from trailheads in this area, and Sipi is where most people organise and acclimatise.

If you are considering a serious mountain trek in Uganda, compare it with the Rwenzori Mountains — Elgon is less technical, less wet and considerably cheaper; the Rwenzoris are higher, harder and more spectacular.

Getting there, and the honest trade-off

Sipi is in the east. The safari circuit — Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi — is in the west. Adding Sipi is not a detour; it is a separate leg, usually run as an eastern loop with Jinja on the way.

On a two-week Uganda trip that is a fair use of two or three days. On ten days it usually means dropping a park, and we would generally advise against it. Sipi is beautiful, but it is not a substitute for gorillas or Murchison on a first visit.

How to choose

1. Confirm the room faces the falls. The single question that matters here.
2. Ask about the terrace — private beats shared.
3. Book the coffee tour as well as the waterfall hike.
4. Give it two nights. One means arriving, hiking exhausted, and leaving.
5. Only include it on a longer trip. Under twelve days, the east usually costs you something better.

How long does it take to drive from Kampala to Sipi Falls? It is a long day's drive east, usually broken at Jinja. Most itineraries that include Sipi build it into an eastern loop with Jinja rather than treating it as a day's detour from the western parks, which it is not.

How many waterfalls are there at Sipi? Three, on the Sipi river as it comes off the Mount Elgon escarpment. The lowest and largest is the one in the photographs. The standard guided hike links all three and takes several hours on steep ground.

Can you climb Mount Elgon from Sipi Falls? Yes — the Sasa trail up Mount Elgon starts near Budadiri, and Sipi is the usual base for organising a climb and for the Sipi trail route. Elgon is a multi-day trek to the Wagagai summit and needs proper planning, not a spontaneous addition.
