Short answerEntebbe to Bwindi is 8–10 hrs and anchors every Uganda itinerary. Kampala to Murchison is 4–6 hrs. Kigali to Bwindi is only 4–5 hrs, which is why flying into Rwanda often beats flying into Uganda. Full table below.

Almost every disappointing Uganda itinerary is a distance problem dressed up as something else. The parks look close together; the roads between them are slower than the map suggests; and a plan that assumed four hours where the answer is eight collapses on day three.

Here are the numbers, in one place, so you can plan against reality.

Every drive time, in one table

Road transfer times across Uganda and Rwanda
RouteDriving timeNotes
Entebbe → Bwindi8–10 hrs480–540 km. Normally split with an overnight.
Kampala → Murchison Falls4–6 hrs~305 km to Paraa. Add time for Ziwa.
Kampala → Kibale5–6 hrsVia Fort Portal, crossing the equator.
Kampala → Queen Elizabeth7–8 hrsTo Mweya. Usually reached from Kibale instead.
Kampala → Lake Mburo3–4 hrs~228 km. The classic first night going south-west.
Kampala → Jinja2–3 hrs~80 km, but traffic decides it.
Kampala → Sipi Falls4–5 hrs~277 km via Mbale.
Kampala → Kidepo10–12 hrs570–740 km. Two days in practice — most people fly.
Bwindi (Buhoma) → Ishasha2–3 hrs~64 km via Kihihi.
Bwindi → Queen Elizabeth (Mweya)5–6 hrsVia Ishasha. Best split into two half-days.
Queen Elizabeth → Kibale3–4 hrs~130 km.
Kibale → Murchison Falls5–6 hrsThe northern leg of the western circuit.
Bwindi → Lake Bunyonyi1–2 hrsShorter from the southern sectors.
Kigali → Volcanoes NP2–3 hrs~105–116 km on sealed road.
Kigali → Bwindi4–5 hrsVia Cyanika. Border formalities extra.
Ranges, not single numbers — season, road works and how often you stop all move these. Border crossing time is never included in a driving time.

Why the roads are slower than the map

Uganda's trunk roads between major towns are sealed and generally good. The time goes elsewhere:

  • Getting out of Kampala. Routinely the slowest hour of any journey, and entirely unpredictable.
  • Trading centres. Every town on the route slows to walking pace, and there are a lot of them.
  • Speed humps. Uganda uses them liberally on approach to settlements. They are effective and they are frequent.
  • The last stretch. Park approach roads are usually murram, and the final 30 km can take as long as the previous 100.
  • Stops. Equator, fuel, lunch, photographs. A driving time is not a day length.

The drive that shapes every itinerary

Entebbe to Bwindi. 8–10 hrs across roughly 500 km, and there is no way around it if you land at Entebbe and want to see gorillas.

Every Uganda itinerary is really a strategy for absorbing that one leg. The three approaches:

  1. Break it. A night at Lake Mburo turns a brutal day into two civilised ones with a game drive in the middle.
  2. Fly it. A domestic flight to an airstrip near Bwindi removes it entirely.
  3. Avoid it. Fly into Kigali instead — see below.

Rwanda's roads are a different country

Rwandan roads are the best in the region by a clear margin: sealed, maintained, signposted, and with an enforced 60 km/h limit that makes journey times genuinely predictable.

The consequence matters for Uganda planning. Kigali to Bwindi is 4–5 hrs against 8–10 hrsfrom Entebbe — the gorillas are simply closer to Rwanda's capital than to Uganda's airport.

What the rains do to these numbers

Seasonal effect on transfer times
ConditionsEffect
Dry monthsThe times above hold, and the murram sections are quick
Short rainsAdd a little on unsealed approach roads
Long rains (Mar–May)Add meaningfully on murram; some approach roads become genuinely slow
After heavy rainIsolated sections can be impassable without 4x4; occasionally closed
Sealed trunk roads are largely unaffected. It is always the last stretch into a park that suffers.

This is why wet-season itineraries should carry more slack, and why we weight road access more heavily than lodge quality when booking March to May — a point covered in our Bwindi accommodation guide.

When flying is worth it

What a domestic flight actually saves
LegBy roadEffect of flying
Entebbe → Bwindi8–10 hrsSaves roughly a day each way
Entebbe → Kidepo10–12 hrsTurns two days each way into hours
Bwindi → Entebbe (return)8–10 hrsFrees the final day of the trip
Light aircraft carry strict baggage limits, usually soft bags only. Schedules change seasonally.

On trips of five days or less, flying is close to essential — see short Uganda safaris. On longer trips the road legs are part of the experience, and our comparison of road versus fly-in safaris goes through the trade-off properly.

Using these numbers to plan

  1. Treat a driving day as a day. It is not free time between the good bits.
  2. Never plan more than one long transfer in a row. Two consecutive six-hour days is how people stop enjoying a trip.
  3. Put a lake or a short park between long legs. Mburo, Bunyonyi, the crater lakes.
  4. Add an hour to any leg crossing a border.
  5. Never cross a border or take a long transfer the morning of a gorilla trek.
  6. Build slack in the wet season.

For how these times translate into trip lengths, see how many days a Uganda safari needs.

Drive times: common questions

How many hours is the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi? Eight to ten hours of driving, covering roughly 480–540 km depending on which Bwindi sector you are heading to. Almost nobody drives it in one push — it is normally broken with an overnight at Lake Mburo or Kabale, which also turns a transit day into a game drive.

How long is the drive from Kigali to Bwindi? Four to five hours in total. Kigali to the Cyanika border is about 119 km and around three hours, then two to three hours on to Bwindi's southern sectors. Border formalities add roughly an hour on top and are not included in driving time.

How far is Kampala from Murchison Falls? Around 305 km to Paraa via the Kichumbanyobo gate, which is four to six hours of driving. Most itineraries add a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way, which extends the day but is worth it.

How long does it take to drive between Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth? Five to six hours from Buhoma to Mweya via the Ishasha sector. Broken at Ishasha it becomes two comfortable half-days with game viewing on both, which is how we generally route it rather than driving it in one go.

How long is the drive from Kampala to Sipi Falls? Four to five hours, covering around 277 km via Mbale. Published estimates run as high as six hours depending on how long it takes to clear Kampala's traffic — the distance is not the variable, the city is.

Do you need a 4x4 to drive between Uganda's parks? The main highways between towns are sealed and fine in any vehicle, but the approach roads into most parks and the tracks inside them are unsealed. A 4x4 is standard on any guided safari and strongly advisable in the wet season, when murram roads deteriorate quickly.
