Short answerThe capital of Rwanda is Kigali. It is the country's largest city, home to about around 1.7 million people, sitting near the geographic centre of Rwanda at roughly about 1,570 m above sea level. It has been the capital since independence in 1962.

Most people arrive at this question for one of two reasons: they are checking a fact, or they are working out how to get to the mountain gorillas. This answers both.

Kigali — the short answer

Kigali is Rwanda's capital, its largest city, its seat of government and the location of its international airport. Unusually for an African capital, it is not on a coast, a great lake or a major river — it sits inland, near the middle of the country, spread across a series of steep ridges.

Why Kigali, and since when

Kigali became the capital at independence in 1962. Before that, power sat elsewhere: Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy, and the colonial administration was centred at Butare, then called Astrida.

Kigali's central position was the practical argument — in a small, densely populated and extremely hilly country, being in the middle matters. It has since grown far beyond anywhere else in Rwanda.

The cleanest city in Africa

Kigali has a reputation for cleanliness and order that visitors almost always remark on, and it is not accidental. Two policies explain most of it:

  • Single-use plastic bags have been banned since 2008, and bags are confiscated at the airport on arrival.
  • Umuganda — mandatory community service on the last Saturday of each month, during which many businesses close and movement is restricted for the morning.

Both policies, and the wider emphasis on order and unity, are downstream of 1994. Our Kigali city guide covers the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is the context that makes the rest of the country legible.

Kigali is the gateway to the gorillas

This is why most visitors are really asking. Kigali is the closest capital city in the world to a wild mountain gorilla population.

Kigali to the gorilla parks
DestinationDrive time
Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda2–3 hrs
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda4–5 hrs
Entebbe → Bwindi, for comparison8–10 hrs
Kigali to Bwindi crosses the Cyanika or Katuna border; formalities add roughly an hour and are not included.

The comparison in the last row is the useful one. Uganda's gorillas are closer to Rwanda's capital than to Uganda's airport, which is why a growing number of Uganda itineraries fly into Kigali and out of Entebbe — see combining Uganda and Rwanda.

Rwanda's capital: common questions

What is the capital of Rwanda? Kigali. It is Rwanda's capital and largest city, sitting near the geographic centre of the country at around 1,570 metres above sea level, with a population of roughly 1.7 million according to the 2022 census. It has been the capital since independence in 1962.

How do you pronounce Kigali? Kee-GAH-lee, with the stress on the middle syllable. Rwanda's national language is Kinyarwanda, alongside English, French and Swahili — English is the main language of government and education, so visitors rarely have difficulty.

What was Rwanda's capital before Kigali? Kigali became the capital at independence in 1962. Before that, Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy, and the colonial administrative centre was at Butare, then known as Astrida. Kigali was chosen partly for its central position.

Is Kigali safe? Kigali is widely regarded as one of the safest capital cities in Africa, with very low levels of street crime and a visible, professional police presence. Visitors routinely comment on feeling comfortable walking around, including in the evening. Check your own government's current travel advice before booking.

How big is Kigali? Around 1.7 million people in Kigali City per Rwanda's 2022 census, making it comfortably the country's largest urban area. It is built across a series of ridges and valleys, which is why getting between neighbourhoods involves real climbs.

How far is Kigali from the gorillas? Two to three hours by road to Volcanoes National Park — the shortest approach to any mountain gorilla park in East Africa. It is also only four to five hours to Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest via the Cyanika border, which is why many Uganda gorilla trips now fly into Kigali rather than Entebbe.
