Kigali: A Traveller's City Guide

Short answerKigali is clean, safe and unusually likeable, with the best food in the region. The reason to give it a full day rather than a transfer is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which provides the context for everything else you will see in Rwanda. Allow two to three hours there, and leave a gap afterwards.

Most people see Kigali through a car window on the way to Volcanoes National Park. It deserves better than that — partly because it is a pleasant city, and mainly because of one building.

The Genocide Memorial

The Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is the burial place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, and it is the principal place in the country where that history is presented to visitors.

It is not a comfortable visit and is not meant to be. The exhibition traces the origins of the genocide, its execution over roughly a hundred days, and its aftermath, and it includes a room dedicated to children who were killed. Most visitors find that room the hardest part of any trip to Rwanda.

Going matters for a reason beyond the history itself: Rwanda's cleanliness, order and unity — the things visitors remark on constantly — are not incidental national traits. They are policy, adopted deliberately in the aftermath. The memorial is what makes the rest of the country legible.

Eating and drinking

Kigali has the best restaurant scene in East Africa and it is not close. There is proper Rwandan food, a strong Ethiopian and Indian presence, and a genuine speciality coffee culture built on beans grown a few hours away.

Coffee is the thing to seek out specifically. Rwandan arabica is excellent, much of it is exported, and Kigali is one of the few places you can drink it properly at source — a useful contrast with the coffee experience on offer at Sipi Falls in Uganda, which is agricultural rather than urban.

Practical Kigali

• It is hilly. Kigali is built across several ridges. Walking between neighbourhoods involves real climbs.
• Moto taxis are everywhere, cheap and regulated — helmets mandatory and enforced.
• No plastic bags. Banned nationally since 2008 and confiscated at the airport.
• Umuganda on the last Saturday of the month — quiet morning, many businesses closed.
• It is cool. At altitude, Kigali is mild rather than hot, and evenings need a layer.
• Photography. Do not photograph government buildings or military installations, and ask before photographing people.

Where Kigali fits in an itinerary

Kigali sits centrally, and most Rwandan routes pass back through it — so the question is which end of the trip to give it to.

Our preference is a full day at the start. The memorial reframes everything you see afterwards, and doing it on the way out means carrying it home rather than travelling with it. But the counter-argument — that long-haul arrivals are exhausting and a heavy museum is a poor first activity — is fair, and plenty of clients choose the end instead.

Kigali: common questions

Is Kigali worth spending a day in? Yes. It is clean, safe, walkable in parts, and has the best restaurant scene in the region — but the main reason is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is essential context for anywhere else you go in Rwanda. Most itineraries pass through Kigali anyway; giving it a full day rather than a transfer is a small change with a large effect.

How long do you need at the Kigali Genocide Memorial? Two to three hours minimum. It is not a quick stop, and rushing it is worse than not going. Most visitors find they need some time afterwards before doing anything else, so plan a gap rather than scheduling lunch immediately after.

Is Kigali safe for tourists? Kigali is widely regarded as one of the safest capital cities in Africa, with very low levels of street crime and a visible, professional police presence. Normal city precautions apply, but visitors routinely comment on how comfortable they feel walking around, including in the evening.

What is there to do in Kigali besides the Genocide Memorial? The Kimironko market, the Inema and Niyo art centres, the Camp Kigali Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial, the Nyamirambo Women's Centre walking tour, coffee shops that take coffee seriously, and a restaurant scene that is genuinely the best in East Africa.

Can you fly into Kigali and trek gorillas the same day? No — gorilla trekking briefings happen early in the morning at Kinigi, so you need to be near the park the night before. What Kigali does allow is landing in the evening and trekking the following morning, which is far tighter than anything possible from Entebbe.

What is Umuganda and will it affect my visit? Umuganda is mandatory community service held on the last Saturday of each month, during which many businesses close and movement is restricted for the morning. If your Kigali day falls on one, expect a quiet start and plan activities for the afternoon.
