Where to Stay at Murchison Falls: North Bank or South Bank

Short answerMurchison Falls is split in two by the Nile, and the bank you sleep on decides your trip. The north bank holds the Buligi game-drive circuit; the south bank holds the top-of-the-falls hike and the road in from Kampala. A vehicle ferry links them on a fixed timetable, so crossing is a planned move, not a spontaneous one.

Murchison is Uganda's largest national park and its most straightforward big-game destination — elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion and an extraordinary density of hippo and crocodile along the river. It is also the park where accommodation advice most often goes wrong, because almost every list treats it as one place.

It is not one place. The Victoria Nile runs straight through the middle, and the two banks function as separate destinations with a ferry timetable between them. North bank or south bank: the only decision that matters

Everything else — price point, view, whether the shower is hot — is secondary to this. The two banks offer genuinely different days.

The ferry, and why it shapes your day

The vehicle ferry at Paraa is the only crossing inside the park. It runs to a timetable, it has finite capacity, and in high season vehicles queue. None of that is a problem if you have planned around it. It is a significant problem if you assumed you could cross at will and booked a south-bank lodge for a dawn game drive on the north.

This is also why “the lodge is 30 minutes from the park” is a meaningless statement at Murchison unless you know which side of the river both ends of that sentence are on.

Staying on the north bank

The north bank is the game-viewing side. The Buligi peninsula, between the Victoria and Albert Niles, is the classic circuit — open grassland where giraffe and buffalo gather in numbers, with lion following them. Staying here means you are on that circuit at first light with no ferry between you and it.

The property list above spans both banks — we confirm which side each one sits on when we quote, because that is the detail that determines whether your itinerary works. Riverfront rooms are worth asking about specifically: much of Murchison's appeal is watching hippo traffic from a terrace at the end of a hot afternoon.

Staying on the south bank

The south bank suits arrival and departure nights, the top-of-the-falls hike, and anyone combining Murchison with Budongo Forest for chimpanzees — Budongo sits on the southern approach and makes a natural stop on the way in.

The falls themselves are the reason many people come. The Nile is forced through a gorge only seven metres wide before dropping into the pool below, and the short hike to the top puts you next to it. It is loud, wet, and genuinely startling. Doing it from a south-bank lodge is a morning; doing it from the north bank is a morning plus two ferry crossings.

The three price points compared

Murchison has a wider spread of accommodation than any other Ugandan park, which means the price points are genuinely distinct rather than three shades of the same thing.

Staying outside the park

Several properties sit just outside the southern gates, and a few travellers base further out at Hoima when combining Murchison with a route south. Outside-the-park lodges are usually cheaper and often very pleasant, but they add a gate queue and a drive to the start of every game drive — which at dawn is exactly when you least want it.

Our general rule: inside the park for game-viewing nights, outside for transit nights. If a trip is continuing towards Kibale Forest or Queen Elizabeth, a night outside on the way out costs nothing in wildlife time.

How many nights Murchison deserves

• Two nights — one full day. A morning game drive and an afternoon boat cruise. This is the standard, and it works.
• Three nights — adds the top-of-the-falls hike properly, or a Budongo chimpanzee walk, without cutting anything short.
• Four or more — worth it for birders and photographers. Murchison holds an exceptional bird list and the light on the river in the late afternoon is the best in the park.

One night is possible and we do build it when a trip is tight, but it means arriving in the afternoon and leaving after a morning drive, with the boat cruise squeezed or dropped. Given the drive in, that is a lot of road for a short stay.

How to choose

1. Decide the bank first, based on whether game drives or the falls hike matters more, and on when you arrive.
2. Check the property is on the bank you think it is. This is the single most common booking error at this park.
3. Ask about riverfront rooms — the view is much of the point, and it is often a small supplement.
4. Weight a pool in the hot months, more than you would elsewhere in Uganda.
5. Book three to six months out for peak season.

Murchison Falls accommodation: common questions

Should I stay on the north or south bank of Murchison Falls? North bank if game drives are your priority, because the Buligi plains where the wildlife concentrates are on that side and you can be out at dawn without waiting for a ferry. South bank if you are arriving late, leaving early, or want to walk to the top of the falls, which is on the southern side. Many itineraries use the south bank for the arrival night and the north bank thereafter.

How many nights do I need at Murchison Falls? Two nights is the working minimum and gives you one full day for a morning game drive and an afternoon boat cruise to the base of the falls. Three nights lets you add the top-of-the-falls hike and a Budongo Forest chimpanzee walk without compressing anything.

Do I need to book Murchison lodges in advance? Yes for June to September and December to February. Murchison has more beds than most Ugandan parks, so it is less brutal than Bwindi, but the riverfront properties are the ones everyone wants and they go first. Three to six months ahead is comfortable for peak season.

Is there a ferry at Murchison Falls and how does it work? Yes — a vehicle ferry crosses the Nile at Paraa, linking the two banks. It runs to a published timetable rather than on demand, and queues form in high season. Can you stay inside Murchison Falls National Park? Yes. Several lodges sit inside the park boundary on both banks, including properties on the Nile itself. Staying inside removes the park-gate queue in the morning and puts you in the game-viewing areas at first light, which is when the animals are most active.
