Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's share of the Virunga Massif — five volcanoes, bamboo and montane forest, and the mountain gorilla families Dian Fossey studied. It is small, intensely managed, and the easiest gorilla park in East Africa to reach.

The accommodation question here is unusual, because unlike Bwindi there is no sector puzzle to solve. Everything briefs at one place. What replaces it is a price question — Rwanda has built one of the most expensive lodge markets on the continent, and working out where in it to sit is the decision. Everything is measured from Kinigi

The park headquarters at Kinigi, just outside Musanze, is where every trek begins. Groups gather early, permits are checked, families are allocated, and vehicles head to the trailheads from there.

Because the accommodation band is narrow — essentially the corridor between Musanze and the park gate — the transfer times are short and broadly similar. This is the single biggest practical difference from Bwindi, where choosing the wrong sector can leave you three hours from your briefing point. In Rwanda that failure mode barely exists.

Why Rwanda's lodges cost what they do

Rwanda made a deliberate policy choice to position gorilla tourism at the luxury end — fewer visitors, higher spend. The permit price reflects it: $1,500 flat, against $800 in Uganda at peak season. The lodges followed the permit.

The practical consequence: in Uganda the permit is usually the largest single line in a gorilla trip. In Rwanda, at the top of the lodge market, a couple of nights' accommodation can exceed it. Where to stay near Volcanoes

The luxury tier here is genuinely world-class and includes properties that people travel to Rwanda specifically to stay in. The mid-range tier is comfortable and well-established. The budget tier is small but real — Kinigi has simple guest-house accommodation close to the headquarters, which is a perfectly sound way to do this if the permit has already consumed the budget.

Could you just stay in Kigali?

People ask this because Kigali has good hotels at sane prices and the drive is short by regional standards. It is possible. It is also a very long day: leaving in the dark, briefing early, trekking for anything up to six hours, and then driving back.

Our view: use Kigali for the arrival and departure nights, not for the trek. The city genuinely rewards a day — the Kigali Genocide Memorial is essential and sobering, and the food scene is the best in the region — but it is the wrong base for a 07:00 briefing an hour and a half away.

Adding Lake Kivu afterwards

Lake Kivu is the natural decompression stop after a Rwanda trek — a large, deep, bilharzia-free lake with none of the crocodiles or hippos that keep you out of the water elsewhere in the region. Two nights there after trekking turns a tight three-day trip into a proper holiday.

How to choose

1. Secure the permit first. Everything else is easier to move than a permit.
2. Sleep near Kinigi on trek night. Not Kigali.
3. Decide honestly whether the lodge is part of the trip. Rwanda's top properties are destinations in themselves; if that is not what you want, the mid-range tier delivers the identical trek.
4. Book six to twelve months out for peak season at the top end.
5. Add Kivu or Kigali either side rather than flying in and out around a single trek.
